Venezuela’s government has claimed mass prisoner releases, but the NGO Foro Penal says those freed are far from fully free. According to Gonzalo Himiob, a founding member of Foro Penal, released detainees remain under legal restrictions as criminal cases against them are still open.
Rights groups report that only 56 prisoners have actually been released so far, far fewer than the government’s announcement suggested. Himiob warns of a “revolving door” scenario, where political prisoners could once again be used as tools of repression once international attention shifts away.
Families remain anxious, as the government has not disclosed which prisoners have been released or the criteria used. Human rights advocates continue to demand transparency and the full dismantling of Venezuela’s repressive apparatus.
